Moodle 3.2: Provide Feedback Comments to Students on Assignments

Moodle Assignments have a Feedback comments textbox that the instructor can use to give feedback either before or while grading an assignment.

Turning Feedback comments option on/off

Feedback comments are turned on by default in newly created Assignments, but can be turned off. If you do not see a need for Feedback comments, you can turn them off at any time.

Note: Turning Feedback comments off will delete all comments already entered for that assignment.

  1. Go to the course homepage.
  2. Find the assignment you wish to provide feedback for and click the assignment link.
  3. Find the Administration block and under Assignment administration, click Edit settings.
  4. Scroll down and click Feedback types to display the options.
  5. Make sure Feedback comments is checked for it to be on (uncheck it if you want it turned off).

  6. Scroll down and click Save and return to course.

Entering Feedback comments using the Detailed View

  1. Go to the course homepage.
  2. Find the assignment you wish to provide feedback for and click the assignment link.
  3. Click View/grade all submissions or View all submissions (3.2).
  4. Scroll down to the table of student submissions.
  5. Find the student you want to give feedback to.
  6. Click the Grade icon (3.0) Assignment grade icon or the Grade button (3.2) in the grade column for that student.
  7. Enter comments into the Feedback comments textbox. If you do not see a Feedback comments textbox, see Turning Feedback comments option on/off.

  8. If desired, grade the student.
  9. Scroll down and click Save changes.

Entering Feedback comments using the Quick Grading view

  1. Go to the course homepage.
  2. Find the assignment you wish to provide feedback for and click the assignment link.
  3. Click View all submissions (3.2).
  4. Check Quick grading, if necessary. The Quick grading check box is found at the bottom of the page in Options in 3.2. The page will refresh with the Grade column and Feedback Comments column displaying boxes for entering scores and comments.

  5. Scroll down to the table of student submissions.
  6. Find the student you want to give feedback to.
  7. Enter text or copy and paste previously composed comments into the Feedback Comments text box for that student. Note: the text box holds more text than is visible. If you do not see a Feedback comments textbox, see Turning Feedback comments option on/off.

  8. Enter grades and feedback for other students as desired.
  9. Scroll down and click Save all quick grading changes.
