Moodle 3.2: Post a Reply to a Forum

Moodle Forums Forum icon. and Forum+ Forum+ icon. allow for asynchronous communication between students and instructors using an environment similar to general web forums.

Note: If a forum requires a lengthy reply, we highly recommend composing the post in your favorite text editor (e.g., Word, Google Docs, TextEdit, Notepad++, etc), then copying and pasting this text into the posting. This will ensure that work is not lost if your session times out during composition.

Posting a reply to a Forum

  1. Go to the course homepage.
  2. Find the Forum you want to post in, and click the Forum link.
  3. Click the discussion you want to reply in to open it.
  4. Click Reply in the lower right corner of the post.
  5. Edit the Subject, or leave it as is.
    • Changing the Subject does not start a new thread.
  6. Type in or copy and paste text in the message area.
  7. Choose whether to subscribe to the forum or not under Discussion subscription.
  8. To attach a file, drag-and-drop into the Attachment area or click the Add button.
  9. Click Post to Forum.

Instructors will see an additional option when replying, called "Post Immediately". This bypasses the standard 15-minute editing window.

If a forum subscriber has chosen to receive an individual email for each post, the next time the Moodle mailer runs that person will be notified. By default, the Moodle profile is set to send a digest after 5:00 PM, so most recipients will receive the post in their daily digest.

Posting a Reply to a Forum+

  1. Go to the course homepage.
  2. Find the Forum+ you want to post in, and click the Forum link.
  3. Click the discussion you want to reply in to open it.
  4. Scroll down to enter a Subject.
  5. Type in or copy and paste text in the Type your post area.
  6. To attach a file, click Browse (Choose Files in Chrome) and locate the file.
  7. Click Submit.

Posting a Reply with Moodle Mobile

  1. From the My Courses view, select the course.
  2. Select the section you want to post in, then select the Forum.
  3. Select the discussion you want to reply in to open it.
  4. Select Reply in the lower right corner of the post.
  5. Edit the Subject, or leave it as is.
    • Changing the Subject does not start a new thread.
  6. Type in or copy and paste text in the message area.
  7. To attach a file, select Add file.
  8. Click Post to Forum.
