Moodle 3.2: Export and Import Entries into a Glossary Activity

You can share glossary entries from one Moodle glossary to another Moodle glossary in the same or a different Moodle site using the Export and Import link in the Administration block within the glossary you want to share. Use these directions to share glossary entries with other instructors who would like to access glossary terms.

Exporting entries into a Glossary activity

  1. Go to the course homepage.
  2. Find the Glossary and click its link.
  3. Find the Administration block, then click Export entries.
  4. Click Export entries to file.
  5. An XML file with the name of the glossary as the file title name will be downloaded to your computer.

Importing entries into a Glossary activity

  1. Go to the course homepage.
  2. Find the Glossary and click its link.
  3. Find the Administration block, then click Import entries.
  4. Go to the Import questions from file section. Do one of the following:
    • Drag and Drop your file into the File to import box or
    • Click Choose a file, then use the File picker to upload your file.
      1. Click Upload a file.
      2. Click Browse (or Choose File).
      3. Select the file to upload, and click Open.
      4. Click Upload this file.
  5. Use the Current glossary drop-down menu to indicate whether you wish to add the terms to the current glossary or create a new glossary with these entries.
  6. Click the Submit, then Continue button. Your glossary should now contain those new entries.
  7. Return to your course homepage.

Additional Resources

For importing other glossary lists that may not be coming from another Moodle site, you may be able to import the list using VLE Tools. VLE Tools at www.vletools.com has an open source application and directions on how to prepare text files to be converted to proper XML format to import into Moodle quizzes and glossaries. It may be helpful for importing a large number of entries.
