[email protected] Site: Understand Content Types

The [email protected] website at http://it.umn.edu is published on the UMN Drupal platform and managed by the OIT Communications group with the help of OIT staff members who are designated as content contributors by our service directors. Contributors may use the following Content Types to display content depending on their roles and permissions.

Content Types

The most common content types used by [email protected] content contributors are: Business Service, Service Offering, Service Offering News, Service Subpage and Service Subpage (Two Column).

  • About Us Pages
    Used by the OIT communications team to publish pages about [email protected] and OIT. These are linked from the footer of every page.

  • Audience Page
    DEPRECATED. Was used by the OIT Communications Team to highlight services for students and faculty and staff.

  • Blog Article
    Used by the OIT Communications Team to post an article to the Inside [email protected] blog.

  • Blog Home for Article Teasers
    Used to display excerpts of blog articles about a particular subject that link to the full articles.

  • Blog Home for Full Articles
    Used by some IT managers to display single pages of 10 blog articles about the areas they manage.

  • Building Wireless Coverage Map (NOT IN USE)
    Formerly used by Data Network Services contributors to add images of heat maps to the Coverage Maps page. Heat maps are now displayed in a separate web application embedded in Data Network Services pages.

  • Business Service
    Business services encapsulate related service offerings that are overseen by service directors. Each has a page that is automatically generated from the ServiceNow service portfolio. Contributors assigned by each service director may edit some parts of these pages.

  • Campaign Page
    Used by the OIT Communications Team to tell a story about a project or service. It has limited navigation in order to guide users toward an intended goal, such as a click through to a single or limited number of pages.

  • Comparison
    Used to compare the features of two or more technologies or services.

  • Conference
    Used by communications staff to create a home page for conferences hosted by OIT.

  • Conference Intersession
    Creates a session listing on the Conference home page it is affiliated with, but the page is not viewable or findable by end users.

  • Conference Session
    Creates individual pages for conference sessions. Excerpts are displayed on the Conference home page.

  • Conference Subpage
    Creates a page with the same banner as the Conference home page it is associated with.

  • Course
    Used by Technology Training contributors to add short course listings to the List of Courses page and ensure they appear in search results. These nodes should not be linked to directly.

  • Event
    Used to list events on the Technology and Service Details pages.

  • Experts & Communities
    Used to list experts and communities in the Featured Resources section on the Explore, Technology, and Service Details pages.

  • Experts & Communities Subpage
    Creates subpages for an Experts & Communities page that features an OIT-sponsored community.

  • Explore - All
    Used by Web Content Ccoordinators to create new Explore pages.

  • Explore - Audience
    Used by Web Content Coordinators to create new audience Explore pages.

  • External Resource
    Used by Technology Training contributors to add links to resources not on the [email protected] site to the Self-Help Guides and ensure they appear in search results. These nodes should not be linked to directly.

  • Faculty (NOT IN USE)
    Information about an individual faculty member. Appears in the contributor interface because it is part of the University's Drupal base theme and cannot be easily removed, but not currently used contributors to this site.

  • FCoP Landing Page
    Use this content type for formal communities of practice (FCoP) main pages.

  • FlexSlider Example
    Used for generating example FlexSlider implementations.

  • General Page
    Used by OIT Communications Team and IT Leadership Team staff or their designees for pages not related to business services or service offerings.

  • Good Practice
    Used to highlight a good practice in the use of a technology or service.

  • Group
    Used by OIT Communications Team staff to assign content contributors permissions for adding and changing content to specific business service, service offering, or technology pages as assigned by service directors.

  • Hardware
    Used by Hardware & Software Purchasing contributors to add hardware listings to the Hardware & Software Purchasing page.

  • Imported Content (NOT IN USE)
    Formerly used to import content from our old content management system, UMContent, into Drupal. Appears in the contributor interface because it is part of the University's Drupal base theme and cannot be easily removed, but not currently used on this site.

  • Internet & Telephone
    Used by Computer Device & Support Services staff to display information on the Hardware & Software Purchasing page about cellular service providers who offer discounts to University of Minnesota affiliates.

  • IT Partners Subpage (Two Column)

  • Landing Page (NOT IN USE)
    This is a content type with no fields of its own that is intended purely to be a container for panes. Appears in the contributor interface because it is part of the University's Drupal base theme and cannot be easily removed, but currently not used on this site.

  • Location Page
    Use this content type to provide information about a location such as a computer lab, including address, photographs, and hours.

  • News
    Used by the OIT Communications Team to post an article to the [email protected] News and home pages.

  • News Release
    Used by the OIT Communications Team to post an article to the [email protected] News page and home pages.

  • Portfolio Inventory - Categories
    Used by the Enterprise Standards group to add additional categorized listings to the Portfolio Technology home page.

  • Portfolio Inventory
    Used by the Enterprise Standards group to publish a listing of all Portfolio Technology pages. Use the Portfolio Inventory - Categories content type to add additional tabs.

  • Portfolio Service Offering
    A Resources for IT Partners page that provides information for IT staff and decision makers about how a particular service offering in a business service grouping is delivered, operated, and measured.

  • Portfolio Technology
    Used by the Technical Advisory Council to publish information for IT partners on campus about each technology considered for or in use at the University.

  • Project Home Page
    Used to publish a page for special projects that has a menu to subpages for that project.

  • Project or Function Page
    This template is used by the OIT Communications staff and other approved contributors to publish information about special projects, functions as opposed to services, or other information that needs to link to subpages.

  • Self-Help Guide (NOT IN USE)
    DO NOT USE. This has been replaced by the Self-Help Guide Column and Self-Help Guide Page content types.

  • Self-Help Guide Column
    Columns that Self-Help Guide pages will reference and display on their pages. These content type pages will not be publicly visible, even when published.

  • Self-Help Guide Page
    The main self-help guide page that will be publicly view-able when published. This page will be composed of attached Self-Help Guide Columns content.

  • Service Details
    Used to present the details of a service provided by an IT business service.

  • Service Offering Audience
    Each service offering page can optionally link to subpages for different audience members (students, faculty & staff, researchers, guests, and IT staff).

  • Service Offering News
    Used by service offering page content contributors to post a news item about that service offering that will be automatically summarized on the service offering page under the heading "Features & Announcements."

  • Service Subpage (Two Column)
    Used by service offering page content contributors to publish pages with a main body of content plus related content in a right column that is associated with a particular service offering.

  • Service Subpage
    Used by service offering page content contributors to publish pages with a single column of content that are associated with a particular service offering.

  • ServiceNow Knowledge Base Article
    Used to import articles from the ServiceNow knowledge base via XML Web Service into the site on an hourly basis. The content can only be changed in ServiceNow.

  • Software
    Used by Hardware & Software Purchasing contributors to add software listings to the Hardware & Software Purchasing page.

  • Staff
    Provides information about the an individual staff member's professional role and contact information. The staff member's photograph, name, and title can be displayed on Team pages.

  • Team Page
    Displays a description of a service or functional line team's purpose and the photographs and names of team members pulled from individual Staff pages.

  • Technology
    Used by OIT Communications Team staff to add the names and descriptions of technologies associated with specific service offerings to the site so they can be linked to the service offering pages. These nodes should not be linked to directly.

    This content type is used to publish https://it.umn.edu/help.

  • User Story
    Used to to hightlight success stories from our users.

  • VPN Downloads and Guides
    Used by Data Network Services staff to display links to virtual private network (VPN) clients and documentation.

  • Webform
    Used by OIT Communications Team and selected service team staff to create a new form or questionnaire. Submission results and statistics are recorded and accessible to privileged users.
