Drupal Lite 7: Create a New Automated List (aka View)

Views is the tool Drupal uses to create and organize automated lists. It is a very powerful and configurable tool.

Often, you will create a new View when you need a new collection of automated lists. Each View can organize multiple automated lists, all sharing key features. To add an automated list to a View, you would add a new display.

Additionally, your role in Drupal may not have the proper permissions to complete the task. Contact your site administrator for additional information.


  1. Click Menu in the Administrator toolbar.
  2. Click Custom Settings in the Menu bar.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4. Click Manage Views.

  5. Click Add new view.

  6. Provide a title in the View Name field (required).
  7. Select your initial filter criteria: Show, of type, tagged with, and sorted by fields.

    • Note: Often, you will select to show content of a particular content type. For example, Show Content of type Faculty.
  8. If checked, uncheck the Create a page checkbox.

  9. Fill in an optional fields as needed.
    • Recommended fields include: Description
  10. Click Continue and edit. You will see a new screen that includes a list of displays for the View.
    • Note: By default, a new View has one display called Master. Normally, we want to create a new display to replace the Master.
  11. Click +Add.

  12. Click Content pane. The Master display should be replaced with a new display called Content pane. It should have all the same settings as the Master display.

    • Note: In the UMN Drupal system, we only use Content pane for View displays.
  13. Click Content pane in the Display name field.

    • The display name field controls the text that appears in the display box in the list of displays.
  14. Provide a title for this display in the Name field.
  15. Click Apply.
  16. In the Format section, click Fields for the Show option.

    • The Show field controls how the View display will reference and lay out the content in the automated list. Normally, you will want to use a panel associated with the relevant content type.
  17. Click the Content radio button.
  18. Click Apply (all displays).
  19. Select Teaser from the View mode drop-down menu.

    • Note: Teaser is intended to be the panel for View displays. Your site might use a different panel for its View displays.
  20. Click Apply (all displays).
  21. Fill in any optional fields as needed.
    • Recommended fields include: Title, Filter Criteria, Sort Criteria, Pager.
  22. Click Save.
