Drupal Enterprise 7: Linking to External Pages

The following instructions are for websites using the default UMN Drupal Enterprise 7 (DE7) configuration.

In the University's standard Drupal 7 installation, it's easy to create links to other content on the internet. You can only create hyperlinks in fields that support Rich Text. (cf. types of fields in the content form)

To create a link to an external page (i.e., a page not contained within your site)

  1. Log in to your site
  2. Find the content you want to add a link to
  3. Select the text you want to hyperlink
  4. Click the Insert/Edit Link on the editing toolbar
  5. the insert/edit link button on the wysiwyg toolbar
  6. In the hyperlink dialog box
    1. Insert the fully qualified URL in the Link URL field
    2. Use the Target selector to choose the action when a visitor clicks the hyperlink
      1. Open Link in Same Window
      2. Open Link in New Window
  7. Click Insert

Save your content and test the link to make sure it behaves as you desire (goes to the correct location, opens in same/different window)
