Downloads and Guides: Install AnyConnect VPN for macOS

Follow the instructions below to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client for Mac. If you are looking for instructions on installing AnyConnect VPN on a Windows machine, see  Installation requires that you have local administrator access.  If you need admin rights on a University-owned machine, contact Technology Help. Installing Cisco AnyConnect for macOS

  1. Click on the Download button under the AnyConnect for macOS (Recommended) section on the Downloads & Guides page.
  2. Enter your Internet ID and password, if prompted. Save the application, Do Not Run from the web.
  3. Find and open the anyconnect-mac-[version]-repack-signed.pkg installer package in your Downloads folder.
  4. Follow the steps in the UMN Cisco AnyConnect Installer until the installation is complete. See the General tab in System Preferences to Allow the Cisco Extension.

Additional Installation instructions for macOS 10.14 (Mojave) and greater

Starting with macOS 10.14 Apple intruduce the requirement to notarize applications, an addequate solution has not been found in our environment yet. Due to this the application developer will have to be allowed to complete the installation, this process is outlined below and specific information can be found a the following Apple Support Document, Safely open apps on your Mac.

  1. Click on the Download button under the AnyConnect for macOS (Recommended) section on the Downloads & Guides page.
  2. Enter your Internet ID and password, if prompted. Save the application, Do Not Run from the web.
  3. Find and open the anyconnect-mac-[version]-repack-signed.pkg installer package in your Downloads folder.
    1. A new window will open, informing you this package cannot be be opened because it cannot be checked for malicious content, click OK.

  4. Launch System Preferences, navigate to the Security & Privacy menu and navigate to the General tab. For 'anyconnect...' click Open Anyway to allow the package to open.

  5. A notification window should open, stating the package can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. To start the installation, click Open.

  6. Follow the steps in the UMN Cisco AnyConnect Installer until the installation is complete. See the General tab in System Preferences to Allow the Cisco Extension.

Additional Information

The Cisco AnyConnect program will now be visible in Finder>Applications>Cisco.

If needed, the supporting files for the package will be located in Macintosh HD>opt>cisco>vpn>profile.
