Downloads and Guides: Install AnyConnect VPN for macOS

Follow the instructions below to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client for Mac. Installation requires that you have local administrator access. To connect to Cisco AnyConnect follow the instructions in Connect to AnyConnect VPN for Mac OS X.

Installing Cisco AnyConnect for macOS

  1. Navigate to the Downloads & Guides page.
  2. Under the AnyConnect for macOS (Recommended) ​​​​​​section, select the Download button.
  3. Enter your Internet ID and password, if prompted. 
  4. Save the application, Do Not Run from the web.
  5. From your Downloads folder, find and open the anyconnect-mac-[version]-repack-signed.pkg installer package.
  6. Follow the steps in the UMN Cisco AnyConnect Installer until the installation is complete.
  7. Navigate to System Preferences on your computer.
  8. Select the General tab.
  9. Set the Cisco Extension to Allow.

Additional Installation instructions for macOS 10.14 (Mojave) and greater

Starting with macOS 10.14, Apple introduced the requirement to notarize applications; an adequate solution has not been found in our environment yet. Due to this, the application developer will have to be allowed to complete the installation; this process is outlined below and specific information can be found a the Apple Support Document Safely open apps on your Mac.

  1. Navigate to the Downloads & Guides page.
  2. Under the AnyConnect for macOS (Recommended) ​​​​​​section, select the Download button.
  3. Enter your Internet ID and password, if prompted. Save the application, Do Not Run from the web.
  4. Find and open the anyconnect-mac-[version]-repack-signed.pkg installer package in your Downloads folder.
    1. A new window will open, informing you this package cannot be be opened because it cannot be checked for malicious content, select OK.

  5. Launch System Preferences, navigate to the Security & Privacy menu and navigate to the General tab. For 'anyconnect...' select Open Anyway to allow the package to open.

  6. A notification window should open, stating the package can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. To start the installation, select Open.

  7. Follow the steps in the UMN Cisco AnyConnect Installer until the installation is complete. See the General tab in System Preferences to Allow the Cisco Extension.

Additional Information

The Cisco AnyConnect program will now be visible in Finder > Applications > Cisco.

If needed, the supporting files for the package will be located in Macintosh HD opt cisco > vpn > profile.
