Canvas Transition: Flatten Your Moodle Question Bank

A Moodle question bank hierarchy can contain several levels of subfolders (called Categories in Moodle). Because Canvas (and Respondus) adhere to the Question and Test Interoperability (QTI) standard, a question bank hierarchy can only be one folder deep.

If you have any subcategories you will need to flatten your Moodle question bank because Canvas will convert subcategories into top level folders. Flattening involves renaming your subcategories.

Renaming Subcategories in a Moodle Question Bank

  1. Go to the course site home page in Moodle.
  2. Find the Administration block:
    • Click Question bank, then Categories.
  3. Click the Edit this category gear icon.
  4. Edit the Name.
  5. Click Save changes.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 until you are done renaming categories.
  7. Navigate back to the course homepage.
