Storage Portfolio Restructuring Initiative - Overview
Re-envisioning storage services to best serve University academics, research, and outreach with requirement-based digital data storage solutions.
The Storage Portfolio Restructuring Initiative (SPRI) applies a strategic and sustainable approach to providing storage services for the University of Minnesota, enabling
- Improved visibility and awareness of activity and usage
- Greater granularity for operational reporting
- More accurate classification of the data being stored
- Simplified data migrations in the future

SPRI: Three Phases of Implementation
For details, see the Timeline of Isilon Data Migration as a text version (opens in new tab).
The initiative is being implemented in three phases.
+
Application Storage
This service would provide shared application space for departmental applications. Learn more and request Application Data Storage.
+
Cloud Storage Services
Cloud-based storage for the University community. Always available, low performance, long term storage. Includes secure cloud storage options. Current technologies include: Google Drive, Team/Shared Drive, Box, Kaltura MediaSpace.
+
Departmental Storage
This service provides "mapped drives" for staff and departmental shares for UMN departments. It is intended for primary work, administrative data, files used in daily work-life that do not involve transactions or applications. Learn more about Departmental Data Storage.
+
High Performance Storage
This service provides a high-performance, temporary space for data to live while being actively processed. Space to run data analytics and other highly-transactional workloads against data sets, without being stored on a permanent basis. Scratch space, short term storage. Learn more and request High Performance Storage.
+
Research Data Storage
Research Data Storage is intended for current research data that is frequently accessed, but that does not require high transactional (compute) capacity. Appropriate data files include datasets, lab workbook data, research group papers, and other research data that do not contain private healthcare information. Learn more and request Research Data Storage.
+
Static Storage - Coming Soon!
The Storage and Hosting service will begin designing this service intended for infrequently accessed data in January 2021.
+
Systems Back-up Storage
The Systems Backup Storage service provide a reliable and inexpensive place to copy or sync data that does not need to be backed up, snapped, or replicated. This service will provide a space for IT staff or system administrators to sync a copy of data files from other servers or desktops as a backup. Primarily for IT uses, not intended for individual device backups.
