Personal Web Space: Using Fugu to Manage Your Files
As announced on July 6, the University plans to retire this service at the end of the 2016-17 academic year. In order to minimize any potential impact on academic courses, the service will remain available until June 30, 2017. The most recent announcement regarding this can be found here.
Fugu is a program that allows Apple computer users to manage their web spaces via the use of Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP)
NOTE: You must be connected to a University network (on campus or a VPN connection) to log on to the Personal Web Space.
Obtaining the Application
You can download Fugu from CNET.
Click on the green Download Now button in the upper-left part of the page. You may see a pop-up box warning you about a third-pary site. If so, click the Continue to Download button. The application will then download to your machine.
Upon startup, Fugu will prompt you to enter your connection settings. If you'd like to "bookmark" this setup for quick access or will be managing SFTP logins to multiple servers, click the Add to Favorites button for each connection you set up.
Complete the login form as follows:
Connect to: <your Internet Id>.email.umn.edu
Username: <your Internet ID>
Port: leave empty.
Directory: leave empty.
When you're ready, click Connect to proceed.
The first time Fugu connects to a server, it will prompt you to confirm its authenticity:
Fugu will now prompt you for your password:
The password is the same as your University of Minnesota Internet Password (the one you use to log into webmail). Type in your password and click the Authenticate button. You may click the checkbox for Add Password to Keychain if you want Fugu to remember your password.
If your password is authentic, Fugu will take you to your personal storage space.
When you see this screen, it means you've successfully logged into your SFTP space with Fugu.
Once you have connected to your web space, you will see the main window. The left half of the main window shows the files on your computer. The right half of the main window shows the files on the server.
You'll find the path for both the local and the remote directories displayed in the drop-down menu above each list.
You can change directories by double-clicking the name of a directory in the file list.
Navigate out of the current directory using the drop-down menu above the file list.
Use the up arrow to the right of each drop-down menu to show the parent directory of the current folder.
Finally, the History button lists directories you have visited on this host. You may re-enter any one by selecting it from the history list. Choosing the Go To... command from the Directories menu prompts you for a directory name and makes that the current directory.
Uploading and Downloading Files:
To "get" or "download" a file, drag it from the remote window to the left side. Fugu will automatically detect the file type. To get multiple files, or directories, click on them while holding down the Command key and then drag them to the left side.
To transfer a file from your local directory to the remote server, simply drag the file into the remote location window. To transfer multiple files, or folders, to another server hold down the Command key and drag the files into the remote location window.
You may cancel any on-going operation by pressing the Cancel button. Some remote servers do not support the cancel command and will continue the current operation until it is completed. In that case your only options are to close the connection (by clicking Disconnect) or to quit out of Fugu by choosing the Quit command from the Fugu menu.
When you use Fugu to transfer files the pages you transfer will not be readable to others. To make these pages viewable to others or viewable on the web, you will need to change the file permissions for the folders and or files within FUGU.
- After you have uploaded your file(s), if any of the files that you want to be seen by others are inside folder, first set the permissions on these folders. Click the directory folder name to highlight it, then click the Info icon at the top. In the window that opens, select the access levels you wish in the Permissions section.
- To make a your documents viewable on the web, select Read for all, Execute for all, and Write only for the owner. The Octal Mode Representation should be 755.
- For individual files you do not need to set the permissions to be Execute for all. Instead set the permisssions for individual files to Read then click Apply.
