At this meeting, we shared NGN project updates and reviewed upcoming NGN work in the Data Center and Distribution/Edge segments, discussed firewall management and training, answered NGN questions from the community, and introduced the two new, impactful initiatives focused on Voice Right-Sizing and Unauthorized WiFi Device Management. NGN Data Center Core Cutover

July 29, 2018

The Data Center core routing will be moved from existing routers to new equipment.

Wired Network Upgrade (Distribution & Edge)

Scheduled to begin in August 2018

During the Distribution & Edge portion of the NGN project, the wired network equipment will be replaced and upgraded in every building system-wide. A draft schedule is posted below. Cutovers will be conducted during the work week. While upgrade work is being conducted, network service (both WiFi and wired network connections) will be intermittently unavailable. Buildings are listed below in tentative order of upgrade. This schedule is subject to change. If you have questions or timing concerns, please contact the NGN team at ngn@umn.edu.

The NGN scheduling team will take scheduling requests into consideration if reported. Every effort for schedule adjustments will be made to move forward in the schedule not back.

The NGN change request process is as follows:

  1. Email ngn@umn.edu with your request and an explanation why there is a need to reschedule. Include academic or visitor event details, dates, the buildings of interest, and a primary contact.
  2. The NGN schedule team will review each request and provide a response with scheduling options within 48 hours.
  3. The NGN schedule team will do all in their power to advance cut schedules ahead if the schedule is to be adjusted.
  4. Once agreed by both the requesting department/unit/building and the NGN scheduling team, the schedule will be modified. If agreement is not reached the issue will be escalated to leadership for review.
