ULearn transition planning underway

December 10, 2017
Planned change: ULearn to training hub

The RFP process for a new training administration solution to replace ULearn is complete. With thoughtful review of University priorities and the available options, the decision has been made to leverage the University’s existing investment in Canvas, our new enterprise online learning management system, with a front-end user interface, or hub, already under development by the Academic Health Center.

Advantages

The decision to leverage systems already in use or development at the University presents many advantages, including:

  • Robust existing knowledge and support: The Technology Help service desk will provide 24X7 assistance, with robust self-help at solution launch.
  • Ease of use: In University of Minnesota usability studies, overwhelmingly, students found Canvas intuitive and easy to use.
  • Tailored for a University environment: Unlike other vendor-provided training solutions, these technologies are built for the needs of the higher education environment.

Next Steps and Timeline

As the technical teams prepare our “training hub,” the transition team is working with those who currently have courses in ULearn to understand transition needs. Units will transition their ULearn courses in spring and early summer. ULearn will be retired and unavailable as of June 30, 2018.

Timeline that depicts what is described above.
