News from NGN: Project Update for July 2019
Next Generation Network (NGN) project teams are continuing to make progress across all five University of Minnesota campuses.
Wired Network (Distribution/Edge)
NGN teams continue to work to upgrade the University’s wired network system-wide.
The status of Twin Cities wired network upgrades are as follows. (Please note: Conversion of private LANs and buildings still needing fiber, of which there are several on each campus, are not counted here.)
St. Paul campus: 100% complete
West Bank: 100% complete
East Bank: 82% complete (see the current schedule)
Twin Cities Residence Halls: 92% complete (Comstock, Pioneer, and Centennial still in progress, targeted to complete before the start of Fall 2019 semester)
System campus upgrades are about 35% complete. Campus updates are below.
Wired network upgrades for UMN remote sites across greater Minnesota are targeted to begin late summer/early fall 2019.
At this time, NGN teams believe the upgrades will be substantially complete with all cutovers by June 2020.
Security and Firewalls
UMN firewalls were successfully upgraded in June.
In July, advanced security features were implemented for UMN firewalls. The new NGN firewalls include advanced security features such as an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) that can block active network attacks as they occur. IPS has been in monitor mode since installation and was shifted into block mode for the most severe alerts.
Data Center customer cutovers are in process and on track to be substantially complete by the end of August 2019.
Crookston is in need of fiber infrastructure upgrades as most of the fiber plant does not meet NGN standards. A contractor is providing a budgetary estimate of the work that needs to be done. For Crookston this is critical path to the distribution/edge cutovers.
Duluth distribution/edge upgrades are 60% complete and are on target to be done prior to the start of the fall 2019 semester.
Teams in Morris have finished up power work for the Core location and are working to install a new fiber cable. Once the fiber cable is in, the Core cutover will be scheduled; August 2019 is the target.
Rochester has recently had core routers installed and prepped for cutover. Once the new cores are in place they will begin the distribution/edge cutovers.
