The next phase of the Next Generation Network (NGN) project is scheduled for the weekend of December 2 and 3, 2017. (Please note: This activity was originally scheduled for November 25 and 26, 2017 but the back-up date was utilized to address a few outstanding concerns.) At this time, migration to new network cores and related equipment will be performed.

NGN teams are committed to minimizing network outages as much as possible, however, small disruptions may be experienced throughout the weekend on the Twin Cities campus as network traffic is routed to the new cores. These short service interruptions may affect any devices or systems that are connected to the University of Minnesota network, such as WiFi, wired connections, building automation and door locks, parking systems, and more. Disruptions to 911 and life services are not anticipated. Additionally, the University’s Data Centers and associated IT services are not likely to be affected.

The team will begin with the St. Paul campus and move to the West Bank followed by East Bank throughout the upgrade window. Impact is not expected to be felt campus-wide, as the cores operate by region.

The NGN team is encouraging departments and units to test their systems before and after the core cutover work to ensure systems are operating as expected prior to the work and have been restored once the work has been completed. If you or your systems are affected during the weekend of December 2-3, please contact Technology Help.

During the cutover process, please visit U of M Service Status for updates. Questions? Contact the NGN team at ngn@umn.edu.
