UMN to launch Google Meet on November 3
Starting Friday, November 3, all UMN campuses will have access to Google Hangouts Meet, also referred to as Google Meet. Google Meet is Google’s next generation online meeting tool. Google Meet offers a similar to experience to Google Hangouts, but with a refreshed and easier to use interface. Google Meet features meetings with up to 25 people, and the ability to share screens and text chat within the meeting interface. Google Meet links can be added to scheduled meetings, or be sent ad-hoc for instantaneous meeting needs.
Google Meet and Google Hangouts will both be available to users for the immediate future, but when Meet launches on November 3 there are some changes that users should be aware of:
- Google Meet will become the default application when using the built-in “Add a video call” feature to a meeting set-up using Google Calendar. Meetings scheduled before November 3 will remain in Google Hangouts.
- On desktop computers, Google Meet only works with the Google Chrome browser. If a user is hosting a video call using Google Meet, it is recommended to add text to the meeting invitation description notifying attendees that they must join via Google Chrome.
- On mobile devices, the Google Meet app is available for Android and iOS.
- By default, UMN users can now meet with anyone, even if their attendees do not have a Google or UMN account. There are no special settings to adjust; just share the meeting URL and go.
