How IT@UMN supported the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games

Last week, the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus was buzzing with the energy of thousands of athletes, supporters and volunteers on campus for the Special Olympics USA Games. While the spotlight rightly shines on the extraordinary displays of athleticism, behind the scenes, University of Minnesota IT professionals from multiple teams were ensuring athletes’ scores are displayed, that their achievements were able to reach the world, and they had access to facilities.

Technologists support olympic operations

During the Special Olympics USA Games, University of Minnesota Athletics’ Gopher Digital Productions technicians operated LED boards, public address (PA) systems, and sound systems. In large-scale sporting events, the technical execution behind the scenes is what transforms a standard competition into an unforgettable, elite-level experience for athletes, families, and fans.

For the University's Data Network team, preparations began more than two years ago with intensive site walkthroughs and formal planning sessions between the Special Olympics Data team and OIT Data Network team. Following assessments of network capacity and Special Olympics needs, the Data Network team deployed additional network switches and wireless access points across competition and event spaces, expanding coverage, increasing capacity, and eliminating Wi-Fi dead zones. That preparation paid off. Organizers were able to register athletes without delay, journalists shared stories and results in real time, and athletes, guests, volunteers, and staff stayed connected throughout The Games.

To streamline facility access and dining logistics, the University Services team worked in conjunction with Conference & Events Services and the U Card Office to test and activate smart stickers on participant badges. The Conference and Events Services team cataloged these unified credentials into the University Housing System while coordinating with the Department of Public Safety to secure proper facility access. The U Card Office then integrated the badge data into the campus dining system, allowing participants to move seamlessly through University dining halls.
