Moodle 3.2: Configure a Timed Quiz
Applies to: Moodle 3.2
The Edit Settings of a quiz has a category for Timing that includes a Time limit which allows for weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. When using a Time limit a digital clock that counts down the remaining time will appear in the upper left corner on each page of the quiz. In quizzes with many questions per page the digital clock will scroll with the page, remaining in the upper right corner, allowing students to always know how much time is left. During the last 15 seconds of a timed quiz the clock will highlight the time with increasingly brighter red background color. At the end of the time limit the quiz does not allow any further changes.
The timing section of the quiz has a setting for When time expires. This setting controls what happens if the student fails to Submit their quiz attempt before the time limit expires. If the student is actively working on the quiz at the time that the countdown timer reaches 0 time left, the quiz module will always automatically submit the attempt for them. It will score all questions that have been Saved, and it will score questions with a student choice that did Not get Saved.
If a student has left the timed quiz (to do research expecting to return?) or loses an Internet connection, only the Saved questions will be scored when the time limit runs out. The timer Does Not stop if the student leaves the quiz or moodle site. Questions with a student choice that have Not been Saved are scored as if unanswered.
There are three choices on what will happen with questions that are marked but not submitted when time expires are:
- Open attempts are submitted automatically (the default and recommended setting.).
- There is a grace period, when open attempts can be submitted, but no more questions answered.
- Attempts must be submitted before time expires or they are not counted.
