Students and instructors who are subscribed to forums have some control over how they will receive email notifications from the forum (e.g., once email a day summarizing all forum posts, or one email for each time someone posts to a forum). The settings for email notifications can be changed at any time during the semester.
Setting email notification preferences
Go to Administration block on the course homepage.
Click My profilesettings and then Edit profile.
In Moodle 2.6, the forum subscription settings are in the General area. In Moodle 2.8, click Preferences.
There are three settings in your profile that govern your forum notifications. Email digest type, if subscribed to a forum:
No digest - A single email per every forum post
Complete - A daily email with full posts, sent after 5pm
Subjects - A daily email with subjects only, sent after 5pm
No, don't automatically subscribe me to receive emails from forums when I post
Yes, when I post, subscribe me via email to that forum
Yes, highlight new posts for me
No, don't keep track of posts I have seen
When finished setting your forum preferences, click scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click the Update profile button.
