Moodle 2.8: Layout and Navigation
Applies to: Moodle 2.8. See Moodle 3.0, 3.2 instructions.
The basic layout of a University of Minnesota Moodle course site is generally a page with a header and one column on the left.
The header uses a UMN banner or college banner for a background image. The name of the course, additional UMN links, and a user profile picture overlays the image. The header also includes a navigation bar to facilitate getting around in Moodle.
The two column section under the header area has a smaller section on the left, and a much larger main section on the right.
The left column contain blocks — useful, frequently used items for managing and enhancing your site. Block placement is unique for every site, except the Administration block, which always appears in the upper left corner. The Administration block will allow instructors to configure the site home page, work with users and groups, access the grade book, backup/restore/import Moodle files from your or other courses, go to the Question Bank, work with Course Files and more. Students will have access to their grades and enroll or unenroll from some of their other sites.
The right column contains the resources and activities of the course, which can be organized into sections of weeks or topics. Sections can be a mixture of resources and activities like discussion forums, quizzes, assignments, pdf files, url links to websites, glossaries, (Moodle) books, and more. The top section is the General section, designated "Topic 0", and is often used for primary information and resources needed for the full course duration. It is the first thing people see when they go to your site. It is also the primary (home) section in several of the course formats.
The Maximize content size icon will hide the left column blocks and expand the page you are viewing to fill the full screen. Clicking a link for another page will bring back the blocks. To keep your content in the full screen viewing mode use ctrl-shift (PC) or cmd-shift (Mac) when clicking the maximize content icon.
To access any resource or activity in Moodle, you simply click on the link on the course homepage.
- Once you access the resource, you can to use the browser back button to return to the homepage.
- You can also use the left column Navigation to move to another activity within the same section.
- You can use the breadcrumbs on the top to jump back to the course homepage.
