Microsoft Office Pro Plus 365 for Faculty, Staff & Students

Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus is available free of charge to employed University of Minnesota Faculty, Staff and registered (in at least one credit) University of Minnesota students for their personally owned computers and devices. Download and install the latest version of Microsoft Office through the Office 365 portal as described below.

If you need Office for a University of Minnesota owned computer please go to http://download.software.umn.edu

If you purchase or obtain your own Office 365 license outside of what is offered through the UMN's license because you want access to an Office 365 program that we are not including in our license DO NOT use your username@umn.edu email address, we recommend using a personal email such as Gmail, Yahoo, etc.  Using your @umn.edu email address could cause conflicts between what you want to use and what we have or have not included in our license.

Install Microsoft Office on up to 15 devices including:

  • 5 computers (Windows &/or Mac laptops or desktops)
  • 5 tablets (iPad, iPod Touch, Android, etc.)
  • 5 Smart Phones (iPhone, Android, & Windows)

Before You Start

  • Is Microsoft Office already installed on your computer? If so, you might not need Office 365. Review Additional Information below to decide if you need Office 365. For best results, uninstall older versions of Office before you install Office 365.
  • You will need a reliable internet connection to download installation files.

Install Office 365

1. Go to  http://portal.office.com/ and enter your UofM e-mail address for your sign-in address (example: user1234@umn.edu). If you are on a coordinate campus and login with your full e-mail does not work, try again and omit the designation for your campus. For example, try user1234@umn.edu instead of user1234@d.umn.edu.

Click or tap on the password blank, but do not enter a password.

Office 365 portal sign-in. Enter your-internetID@umn.edu

2. You will be directed to a second sign-in screen. This screen will be familiar from other applications and services at the University. Log in with your University of Minnesota internetID and password.

No network connection is needed to use Office, although you must connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep Office activated.

OneDrive and Other Online Features Not Included

Our Office365 subscription does not include the OneDrive storage option or online features of Office which sync to a OneDrive account. To sync programs like OneNote, you would need to create your own personal OneDrive account.

To avoid confusion over activation sign-in and OneDrive sign-in:

  • Do not use your UofM username@umn.edu email for your personal OneDrive account. Instead create a OneDrive account using a personal email account such as one from Google, Yahoo, Microsoft or similar services.
  • Install and activate Office first, then create a OneDrive account for use with Office.

Additional Information

    • Wondering if you should upgrade from an older version? See what’s included on Microsoft’s product page*
    • The UofM has not activated OneDrive, OneNote, Skype, or other online features of Office 365.
    • Manage installations through the Office 365 portal (portal.office.com)
    • If you use up all five installations and need more, you can deactivate any of your existing Office 365 installations through the portal.
    • You do not need a product key to activate Office 365. Activation happens automatically when you install Office through the portal.
    • Your Office 365 programs will only work as long as you are a student or staff at the University of Minnesota. When you graduate or leave the U, you will need to purchase Office elsewhere to continue using Office.
    • Office is also available for phones and tablets. From the portal, select Phone & tablet, and then select your device to see which apps are available for your phone or tablet.
