Technology Help Website: Edit and Contribute Content

The Technology Help website at it.umn.edu is managed by the Knowledge, Web, Training, and Communication team with the help of OIT staff members designated as content contributors by our service directors. The self-help content on the website is managed by public knowledge editors in the Tier 2 support teams and others involved in knowledge creation and maintenance in the IT business service teams.

In this article:

Drupal vs. TDX Knowledge Base Content

Self-help content is content about how to use a technology. It can be in the form of tasks that can be reasonably accomplished by a motivated end-user (e.g., step-by-step instructions), contextual information that can help end users understand how a technology is set up, or information about services available to help end users with the technology. It is not organizing information on the Technology Help Website, such as menus.

General, organizing, and self-help guide content is created and maintained in Drupal and published on the Technology Help website. Self-help step-by-step content is created and edited in the TDX knowledge base and automatically pulled into the the Drupal Technology Help website every day. The knowledge base article number is included at the bottom of the corresponding Drupal web page. If you want to make changes to these pages, you must be authorized to do so, and then make the changes in the TDX knowledge base.

Editing and Contributing Content In Drupal

If content you want to update begins with "https://it.umn.edu" and it does not have a TDX Article ID at the bottom of the page, it must be updated in Drupal.

There are two ways to access the edit mode for a page in Drupal:

Using the Edit Button

  1. Locate the page you want to edit.
  2. In a separate tab, go to it.umn.edu/saml_login to sign into the Technology Help website.
  3. Go back to the page you want to edit and reload the page now that you are signed in.
  4. Select the Edit button at the top of the page to enter editing mode.
    1. Note: If you do not see an Edit button. You may not have permission to edit that content type. If you believe you should have editing access, try editing using the Content page. If it is a Knowledge article (How-To page), you will need to edit it directly in TDX. Otherwise, open a z.umn.edu/makeITuserfriendly ticket to request the change.
