GitHub is a web-based code hosting and revision control system. GitHub.com, the largest instance of GitHub, is free to use for open-source projects, and is not managed by the University. However, the University hosts a private GitHub Enterprise instance for use by students and staff with valid Active Directory accounts.
Any interested user who is ineligible for a github.umn.edu account is welcome to create an account at GitHub.com, though they may not be able to contribute to github.umn.edu projects.
Determining Your Active Directory (AD) Account Status
Active Directory (AD) accounts are tied to your University Internet ID, and your AD password is the same as your University Internet Password.
Your AD account status can be found on your Internet Account Options page (http://umn.edu/myaccount). Look for the "Other Accounts" section and click the Active Directory Account Options link.
Note that if your account is ineligible for Active Directory, this process will fail. Depending on the circumstances of your account, this may occur in one of multiple ways. The Technology Helpline is available to clarify what you see in your browser.
(NOTE: GitHub requires that the password is no more than 20 characters in length. If your password is longer, you will need to change your password to a shorter one. This can be done on the Internet Account Options page at http://umn.edu/myaccount, or by contacting the Technology Helpline.)
Take a look at the GitHub FAQ document before asking for help. Many common questions/concerns can be answered through this resource!
