About My Work

What I Do

I co-chair the Learning Analytics DiaLOG group, which guides the operationalization of learning analytics as educational practice at the University of Minnesota. I also chair the Learning Analytics Meet Up, focused on creating opportunities for UMN faculty, instructors, researchers, and academic support staff to explore the potential of data-driven teaching and learning support.

As an active member of the Unizin consortium community, I collaborate with colleagues at peer institutions to develop processes for engaging faculty in accessing, interpreting, and using learning data. Finally, I’m very involved in helping to coordinate and move forward Unizin-related work at the University of Minnesota.

Background

I received my Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in English; my research focused on the rise of "useful knowledge" in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain. I wrote and developed educational courseware at Plato Learning for three years before returning to the University to work at the intersections of teaching and academic technology in 2003.
