Enterprise Block Storage: Storage Solutions for Researchers
Storage and Data Protection Services is the front door for researchers and faculty to find the best storage solution for their specific needs. It doesn’t matter how much storage you need or how you need to use it; our team is here to work with you and guide you to the solution that’s right for you.
It is our mission to help you navigate the storage offerings at UMN, and determine what type of storage is best suited to meet your needs. We offer multiple options and will consult with you on your specifications. We’ll also guide you through the process of determining the best solution for you.
Most (99 percent) of researchers’ needs can be met at no cost to them by one of the many storage offerings the University provides. Both block and file on-site storage services are available at no cost to our faculty, and depending on the type of environment you wish to deploy, either of these may be the best solution for your user or systems data. What’s the difference? Explore Choose Storage Options for information on which of these might work for you.
The University of Minnesota has a strategic supplier agreement with vendor Cloudnexa to provide University researchers, programs, and collegiate and non-collegiate units, system-wide, the ability to purchase any Amazon Web Services (AWS). - high-performance computing
- complex science, engineering and business problems
- business and web applications
- backup and archival storage
- disaster recovery
- video and content delivery
- collaboration ⁄ content tools
We can guide you through the the process of determining whether cloud storage is right for you, and how you can obtain and use cloud storage to meet your research storage needs.

Most of the heroic storage needs are funded by grant-awarding agencies as part of a grant, and require local storage. As we work with you to explore different options based on your specifications and depending on your type of research, together we may find that the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) is best suited to meet your needs. MSI addresses the high-performance computing needs of UMN researchers and research groups, and offers several different types of storage designed to meet the high-performance computing needs of Minnesota’s research community.
