Drupal Enterprise 7: Understanding Your Site Organization (Taxonomy)
The following instructions are for websites using the default UMN Drupal Enterprise 7 configuration.
In Drupal, a taxonomy is one way that content is organized. Every Drupal site will have a single taxonomy, which is made up of different vocabularies. In turn, each of the vocabularies consists of terms. As an example, in an academic site, there might be vocabularies for
types of courses (cybernetics, biochemistry, cryptography, ...)
types of faculty (professors, adjunct, …)
For the content contributor, the primary interaction with the taxonomy is by using either a closed vocabulary (i.e., a “pick from list of terms”) or an open vocabulary (i.e., a text box where anything can be entered in order to “tag” the content)
The Site Builder will have the ability to create new vocabularies, and control how the vocabularies are used (closed, open, ...).
