There are multiple distribution options available to disseminate your programming. Below are the options available to you.
Synchronous (live) and asynchronous (on demand) video streaming is a distribution service provided by OIT. On campus events, held in a room with a wired data jack which has access to the Internet, are capable of distributing a live video stream.
To support a diverse set of users and devices the video feed is available in Flash and HTTP streaming formats. For end user ease of use, the video stream can be embedded within the client's web page. OIT utilizes a content distribution network which has streaming servers located throughout the world which allows the service to support thousands of users simultaneously.
There are numerous program factors clients need to consider, such as:
- How many concurrent viewers will there be?
- Where is your audience viewing program from? (UMN Campus, Minnesota, US-wide, International)
- What device will viewers be using? (PC, Mobile)
- What type of quality level does your audience expect? (HD, web, mobile)
- Do you require any social networking features such as live-chat, twitter, facebook integration?
- Will the event need password protection?
- What type of a network connection will your viewers have?
- Do you want the program to be streamed for viewing live, on-demand, or both?
OIT video production staff can work with the client to determine what is needed to best meet the needs of the intended audience.
Small Event Production
If you need assistance in producing a small event (1 camera, 1 producer) which requires live streaming and recording we can help. Cost is $64.25 per hour for onsite assistance. Depending on the size of you online audience or how much remote participant interaction you require will determine what technology is used to broadcast your event.
For example, if you have a large audience (more than 200 people online) and you require nothing more than online chat our livestream.com service should meet your needs.
UMConnect enables University faculty, staff, and eligible graduate students to create on-demand Web presentations and to communicate and collaborate over the Web through Web conferences and Webcasts. OIT can support your event using UMConnect to Webcast your event live, integrating computer presentation graphics, with video and sound. If you have a mediium size audience (40-200 online participants) and require more interactivity (chat, polling, Q/A) then UMConnect should meet your needs (umconnect.umn.edu)

OIT provides video conferencing (interactive television) connectivity to and from all the University campuses: Twin Cities, Crookston, Duluth, Morris, and Rochester. Data lines provide two-way video and audio links to specially equipped rooms, so instructors and students or meeting facilitators and participants can both hear and see each other.
At this time, OIT provides video conferencing to credit course activity for University of Minnesota departments or colleges free of charge. Non-credit events are minimally charged to cover room maintenance and student operator costs. Cost is $55.11 per hour for non-credit courses if you need a room operator.
If the venue you are using is not large enough to accommodate your entire audience, we are able to send the video and audio feed to another location to accommodate your overflow audience.
