Emerging Leadership Program

The Emerging Leadership Program (ELP) provides IT leadership development opportunities for future leaders across IT@UMN. Facilitated by MOR Associates, this program includes four tracks: workshops focused on concepts and competencies, individual development, action learning, and a leadership network. It aims to foster strategic thinking and the ability to lead, and develop more capable management.

The ELP includes five two-day workshops on the Twin Cities campus and five individual coaching sessions.

The ideal candidate does not have significant supervisory responsiblities and has been identified as capable of moving to the next level of leadership. He or she should demonstrate a strong desire and potential to lead, the capacity to stretch beyond current skills, and strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Selection Process

More than 20 ELP participants are selected annually by the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology. Those interested in the program are encouraged to self-nominate, but may also be nominated by a manager or peer. Nominations should be sent as an email to the Vice President & Chief Information Officer, expressing interest in the program and readiness for this opportunity.


IT Leaders Program

The IT Leaders Program (ITLP) is an integrated leadership program aimed at preparing IT staff from participating Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) universities to address challenges within their respective organizations and, more generally, within higher education. Facilitated by MOR Associates, the ITLP includes three tracks: 360-degree feedback and coaching sessions, six active-learning workshops, and on-going applied learning.

The program has been shaped to address the top 10 critical leadership competencies as outlined by the CIC CIOs, including:

  • Develops People and Teams
  • Systemic Thinking
  • Putting Customers First
  • Integrity & Trust
  • Accountability
  • Change Management
  • Shared Leadership

The ITLP consists of six sessions at the campuses of participating institutions. Most recently, this has included the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Maryland, Michigan State University, University of Minnesota, University of Nebraska–Lincoln, The Ohio State University, Penn State University, and University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Selection Process

Six ITLP participants are selected annually by the the Vice President and Chief Information Officer to represent the University of Minnesota. Those interested in the program should send an email to the Vice President & Chief Information Officer, expressing interest in the program and readiness for this opportunity.
