Flip (formerly Flipgrid) is a student engagement and assessment tool that integrates with Canvas. Flip allows students to record and upload short videos. It also allows them to view, react and respond to other's videos. Flip runs inside your web browser, so there is no software to download, install, or update.
Flip is not set-up in your Canvas course by default, but can be set up in a few steps.

Adding Flip to a Canvas Course
Note: You must have the Teacher role in a course to create a Flip assignment.
- In a Canvas course, go to Settings and click the Apps tab.
- Search for and then select Flip.
- For Flip, click +Add App.
- Enter your Consumer Key and Shared Secret for your integration in the popup and then click Add App.
- You will not see Flip listed in your course navigation. To add Flip content follow the steps below in Creating a Flip Assignment and do so through an assignment.
Creating a Flip Assignment
- Go to Assignments and click + Assignment.
- Enter an Assignment Name
- Under Submission Type
- Select External Tool as the submission type
- Then click Find and in the popup menu select Flip.
- Select External Tool as the submission type
- Click Select and then Save the assignment.
- You will now see your Flip Admin, where you can view and edit your topic.
- If this is the first Flip assignment in a course, it will prompt you to create a Course Group. Do so.
Further Notes
In Flip, the Group setting Canvas Only should be enabled
- This ensures that only students who have been enrolled in the course have access to the content
Instructors must generate a unique Group for each course. In the course that unique Group should then be selected.
Do not list Flip in course navigation. This ensures that all submissions are available in SpeedGrader. This will not remove the tool from assignments. If Flip is listed in course navigation students can submit assignments there and not in an assignment. The submission then will not be tied to a Canvas assignment and instructors will not see the submission if looking for it in Canvas.
