Academic integrity

The Institute of Technology assumes all students who enroll in its programs are serious about their education and expects them to be responsible individuals who demand of themselves high standards of honesty and good personal conduct.

IT expects the highest standards of honesty and integrity in the academic performance of its students. Any act of scholastic dishonesty is regarded as a serious offense that will result in a sanction being imposed, and may result in expulsion. Scholastic dishonesty is defined as:

  • submission of false records of academic achievement;
  • cheating on assignments or examinations; plagiarizing;
  • altering, forging, or misusing a University academic record;
  • taking, acquiring, or using test materials without faculty permission; and
  • acting alone or in cooperation with another to falsify records or to obtain dishonest grades, honors, awards, or professional endorsement.

Aiding and abetting a student in an act of scholastic dishonesty is also considered a serious offense.

Teamwork is required or encouraged in many courses. Students should be sure they understand the extent to which collaboration is allowed and should always acknowledge direct collaboration in any work turned in. If in doubt about what is allowed, ask.

Records of academic misconduct are kept on file in the college office and are also forwarded to the University’s Office for Student Conduct and Academic Integrity (612-624-6073). Students can expect the severity of the sanction to be increased for a second offense.

The IT Student Conduct Committee, composed of faculty and students, hears cases of scholastic dishonesty. When charges are upheld, the student may be placed on disciplinary probation, failed in a course, suspended, or expelled.

A student has the right to a hearing and to appeal any disciplinary action. Copies of the procedures for cases of scholastic dishonesty are available in 128 Lind Hall upon request.
