Digital Copyright

University of Minnesota students must be aware of the digital copyright compliance information linked below. All members of the University community should also be aware of the other digital copyright issues outlined in this section.

Digital Copyright Compliance for Students

The Higher Education Opportunity Act (also referred to as H.R. 4137) includes provisions related to illegal sharing or distribution of copyrighted materials. Colleges and universities are required to provide information to students and prospective students, and to implement and annually review a plan to effectively deter illegal distribution of copyrighted materials such as music, movies, software, and TV shows.

Digital Copyright Awareness

Copyright law applies to music, movies, games, photos, software and other files in digital format. Downloading or distributing copyrighted material without the explicit permission from the copyright holder is against the law. You may be breaking copyright laws without knowing about it.
