Scott Studham

Scott Studham

Scott Studham is the vice president and chief information officer (VPCIO) for the University of Minnesota. He leads IT and plans for its long-term future at the University.

Studham has been the CIO at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He also served as chief technology officer for the National Center for Computational Sciences which is host to the world's fastest computer.

Studham has a bachelor's degree in chemistry, a master's degree in computer science, and a master's degree in business administration (MBA).

Six times in his career, Studham has been the program manager or architect for one of the world's top ten supercomputers. He won the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Supercomputing Conference StorCloud Challenge award for the most innovative use of storage in 2004 and in 2003 was named the Computerworld Honors Laureate, the Smithsonian Institute's award for innovative technologies.

Chris Grantham

Chris Grantham

Chief of Staff

As chief of staff, Chris serves as a strategic adviser to the VPCIO. He is responsible for managing emerging issues and ensuring the efficient flow of information throughout OIT and among University executives.

Prior to joining the University, Chris was a foreign service officer at the U.S. Department of State for nine years, with overseas tours in Saudi Arabia and Jerusalem. He graduated from Whitman College with a BA in sociology.

Sarah Huot

Assistant to the Vice President & CIO

Sarah provides direct strategic, communication and executive coordination for the Vice President & CIO. She works in step with the leadership team to ensure professional, efficient delivery of IT services at the University.

Sarah has a BA in communications from the University of Maryland. She largely focused her efforts on public relations in the nonprofit sector prior to coming to the University of Minnesota in 2014.

Associate Vice President

As the associate vice president for information technology Bernard works with the VPCIO and the ITLT to align, leverage and manage the University's information technology system wide.

Bernard has been at the University since 1986, serving in operational and strategic technology leadership roles and as an adjunct technology professor at St. Catherine University.

Thomas (Tom) Auld, PMP, CSM

Associate Chief Information Officer

As associate CIO, Tom works to ensure that technologies and IT services are aligned with University needs through the IT governance process. He provides strategic direction and major initiative oversight to continue to evolve the solutions provided by IT which will make students, faculty and staff more successful.

Over his 20+ year career, Tom has envisioned and delivered business & technology solutions for global organizations such as Target Corporation, Medtronic, Best Buy, Boston Scientific, and General Mills. Tom has deep experience with all levels of business and technical initiatives while he specializes in Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing, Digital Solutions (mobile & web) and Business Process Engineering.

Dennis Depp

Associate Chief Information Officer
IT Director, College of Law

Dual reporting as IT director for the College of Law and as an associate CIO, Denny Depp recently came to the University from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he has served as a senior IT researcher and more recently as the enterprise architect. Denny holds a BA in mathematics and computer science, and an MS in mathematics. 

Brittany Lloyd

Associate Chief Information Officer

As associate CIO, Brittany works to ensure that technologies and IT services are aligned with University needs through the IT governance process.

Brittany has worked at the University for over 10 years, beginning with the Office of the VP for Research, and then moving to IT. Brittany has extensive experience with the University's enterprise systems, and served as a relationship manager for many of IT's customers.

Before coming to the University, Brittany was a consultant with a Big 5 consulting firm, working with large research institutions across the country.

Heather Noble, Interim Associate CIO

Heather Noble

Interim Associate Chief Information Officer

As associate CIO, Heather works to ensure that technologies and IT services are aligned with University needs through the IT governance process.

Heather has worked in various roles across the University over the past 9 years and has gained extensive institutional knowledge and built strong relationships through her experiences in both central and collegiate units prior to joining OIT. Heather has a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management and a Master’s in Organizational Development with a focus on Higher Education.

Brian Dahlin

Brian Dahlin

Chief Information Security Officer

As the chief information security officer, Brian and his team work to both document new security standards for UMN and develop a risk-based framework by which the University can more efficiently operate in the changing world of information security.

Brian spent 15 years at Cerner: a healthcare information technology company. His experience in information security, regulatory security requirements, and security framework implementation is utilized to advance our information security program.

Chris Ament

Senior Director of Academic Technology & User Support

As the senior director for both academic technology and end user support, Chris oversees two teams of IT professionals: those who leverage technology to enhance teaching, learning, and research at the University and those who provide direct support for the UMN community through the service desk, desktop support, application support, communications, training, usability, video, and request fulfillment.

Chris started his career at the University of Minnesota in 1998 as a software developer and has worked in a variety of roles since then including business analysis, systems administration and project management. His passion for technology and improving the education experience at the University drew him to his current role in academic technology.

Chris holds a bachelors degree in computer science and a masters degree in business administration (MBA).

John Grosen

John Grosen

Senior Director, Infrastructure & Production

John leads the managers and staff who provide the University's basic IT infrastructure including voice and data communications, server and storage platforms, software application platform administration, and data center facilities.

While finishing his MS in computer science at Minnesota State University, Moorhead, in 1993, John's career in higher ed IT began as a Unix system administrator at North Dakota State University where he subsequently held senior systems administrator, associate director, and director of infrastructure services positions. In 2006, after relocating the Twin Cities, John became the IT director for the College of Design at the University of Minnesota. In 2012, John joined OIT as senior director for infrastructure & production.

Sharon Ramallo

Director for Application Development

As the director for application development, Sharon Ramallo leads the University's central application development and maintenance teams.

Sharon has worked at the University for 10+ years, most recently serving as the associate CIO for enterprise systems. During her time at UMN, she has held many roles within the App Dev function, including quality assurance, software development lifecycle (SDLC) process, change management, ERP support for finance and HRMS, and more.

Diane Wollner

Diane Wollner

Senior Director, Business Office

Diane is the senior director of the Central IT Business Office and is responsible for finance and administration, budgeting, reporting and analysis, payroll and human resources.

Diane has experience in the private sector having worked at one of the Big Four Audit firms (Deloitte) and a Fortune 500 Company (Ecolab, Inc) before coming to to the University in 1994. She a BS in business, major in accounting and an MBA, with an IT concentration.

Patton Fast

Patton Fast, Ph.D.

Chief Technology Officer
Enterprise Architect

As the chief technology officer and enterprise architect for the University, Patton is responsible for creating, communicating, and enforcing an enterprise architecture strategy for the University of Minnesota system.

Patton has been associated with the University for 20 years and worked in IT@UMN for 10+ years. He has his PhD in chemistry and master's in business administration.

Larry Storey

Larry Storey

IT Service Director, IT Services Coordination Service

Larry has 12+ years of UMN IT experience, during which he worked for the College of Science and Engineering in various roles. Larry has been active in many informal and formal communities of practice and recently, led the the Enhanced User Support fCoP. In this new role he will continue to build and foster relationships, now with a focus on IT services and the people who use them.
